Wales - The Unique Snowdon Mountain Railway

By: Jeff Cuckson

If you plan to the visit the beautiful country of Wales, with it's great scenery, you must consider Mount Snowdon on your journey and the Snowdon mountain railway. It's a unique place of beautiful scenery and unusual terrain.

In the Welsh language, Snowdon is Yr Wyddfa, which means tomb. The legend and there are many welsh legends in Wales, is it that it is the tomb of the ogre Rhita Gawrgre, who was killed by King Arthur. In Wales you will find many many legends and stories

Snowdon stands 1,085 metres (3,560 feet) high and it is been estimated that each year that over 325,000 people go to the summit by train or for the active among us, by foot. .On the Snowdon Mountain Railway, the trains run from May to October, if the weather permits. It has to be remembered that the winds on the summit can reach well over 100 mph. Ponies were used to take tourists to the summit of Snowdon, before the train was in use.

The Snowdon railway was the brainchild of two people, Richard Moon and George Assheton Smith. As mentioned earlier the present of good weather cannot be guaranteed. You may reach the top only to find cloud cover. If you take the train up Mount Snowdon, you can walk back down a path. Here you will get some wonderful views of the trains

I wish you much enjoyment if you should decide to go to Snowdon with it's unique mountain railway. Truly one of our great tourist attractions.
