St Albans is the major urban region of the City and District of St Albans in southern Hertfordshire, England, approximately 22 miles (35 km) north of middle or central London. It was initially named Verlamion by the Ancient British, Catuvellauni family. It was the first main city on the old Roman road of Watling Avenue for tourists heading north and became the Roman town of Verulamium. The city was called Verlamchester or Wæclingacaester, after the Roman insertion and prior to becoming famous as St Albans.

History

The St Albans region has a long history of resolution. The Celtic Catuvellauni family had a settlement at Prae Hill a mile or so to the west. The Roman city of Verulamium was second principal city in Roman Britain after Londinium, was constructed beside this in the vale of the River Ver a slight closer to the current municipality centre.

Trivia

With the name HMS St Albans, The Royal Navy has used six vessels. As the present container is a Duke Class category 23 frigates, its name is in use from the Duke of St Albans, as compared to the city.

The first gathering of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) was arranged in St Albans on 20th November 1972, at the Farriers Arms bar which has a blue plaque commemorating the event. The association still has its head office in Hatfield Road. The local area office holds a yearly beer festival in St Albans. In current years this has been a four day occasion opening on a Wednesday close to the end of September.

Sport

Sport England published, in December 2006, an appraisal which concealed that inhabitants of St Albans were the 9th most dynamic in England in sports and other health activities. And 26.8% of the residents participate at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes in extra curricular activities.

St Albans is residence to one of the countries oldest and best indoor skate parks; the Pioneer Skate Park in Heathlands Drive, after that the previous fire station. Its ramps are accessible to all skateboarders and inliners. A new exterior mini slope was constructed her in March 2005.

The local football squad is St Albans City FC: its sports ground is on the rim of Clarence Park and the team won endorsement from the Conference South League in 2005 and 2006. It played in the countrywide conference Division of the Football conference for the session of 2006 and 2007, but ended at the base of the table and was demoted. There is also the Old Albanian Rugby Football Club, and a rugby union club which has a large capacity known as the Old Albanian sports complex.

1. Kate Allan (b. 1975), a famous author and writer, lived in St Albans

2. Rod Argent (b. 1945), a renowned composer and songwriter. The Zombies (Argent with Colin Blunstone, Chris White, Paul Atkinson and Hugh Grundy) was made as the member were at school in St Albans

3. Francis Bacon (1561-1626), renowned theorist, scientist and statesman, used to live at Old Gorhambury House. Bacon was also styled "Viscount St Albans" from 1618

Nicholas Bacon (1509-1579), Lord Keeper of the Great seal under Queen Elizabeth I, constructed Old Gorhambury House

4. James Lewis Baker (1976), an immense record creator, artiste and original founder of Source Direct, also born and lives in St Albans.
